Civilians continue to suffer in Lebanon with no end in sight

Since the threats [of military operations] came out, we have seen 13 air strikes being carried out in the various points of the southern suburbs [of Beirut]. It gives you an idea of how destructive the day has been so far.

This is a reminder yet again of how dangerous the situation is in those areas.

There were at least 40 villages in and around the southern areas of the country that came under forced evacuation threats over the past 24 hours by the Israeli military.

There were air strikes carried out in the southern areas of Nabatieh as well as the Tyre governorate in the southern part of Lebanon.

All of this is happening at a time when there is no discussions about a possible end or a lull in this conflict.

What many military analysts here believe is that Israel is using what is known as the Dahiyeh doctrine – using a disproportionate amount of military force to inflict the most amount of damage on civilian infrastructure.

And that is something that the Israeli military is carrying out as we speak to try to push the supporters of the armed group Hezbollah to abandon their support of the group.

But that is something that hasn’t happened so far. And any discussions about a ceasefire seem to be at a halt at the moment.

So really, with no end in sight, it is, again, the civilian population that continues to suffer the most.

Lebanon’s PM, UN official discuss ongoing fighting

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Mikati and the UN official for peace operations have discussed de-escalating tensions with Israel and the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, according to local media reports.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix arrived in Lebanon’s capital Beirut for a three-day visit, Lebanon’s National News Agency said.

During his meeting with Mikati, Lacroix reiterated the importance of enforcing Resolution 1701, which calls for a complete cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.

The resolution, adopted on August 11, 2006, mandates a weapons-free zone between the Blue Line, which separates Lebanon and Israel, and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, with the exception of Lebanese Army forces and UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops.

‘Nowhere in Gaza is safe’: UN official

The UN has held a meeting over the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, including the risk of imminent famine in the coastal enclave.

Ilze Brand Kehris, UN assistant secretary-general for human rights, told the UNSC that among those repeatedly displaced by Israel’s war include pregnant women, children, elderly and people with disabilities.

“Israeli strikes on shelters and residential buildings continue to kill unconscionable numbers of civilians – men, women, and children alike,” Kehris said. “These attacks on so-called safe zones prove that nowhere in Gaza is safe. Monitoring by our office indicates that this unprecedented level of killing and injury of civilians is a direct consequence of the party’s choice of methods and means of warfare and their failure to comply with fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.”

Kehris highlighted that there has been “continued interference” with the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid, saying it had fallen to some of the lowest levels in a year.

What’s expected at the UN Security Council meeting on Gaza?

To put it in a few words: A very grim picture of the situation in Gaza.

We expect to hear from UN officials and from all 15 members of the Security Council.

This all stems from the report that came out on Friday from the IPC. This is a UN-backed panel that looks at food and security that raised the red flag, saying that famine potentially is just days away, particularly in the north of Gaza.

They’re saying if action is not taken within days, famine could hit the north of Gaza. That got the attention of Security Council members and that’s why Switzerland, Guyana and Algeria called for this emergency meeting.

There is no Security Council resolution that’s going to be discussed or voted on in this meeting. This is a chance to raise the issue back on the agenda of the Security Council, because, clearly, Palestinians in Gaza are starving.

Who is Huckabee, Trump’s pick as US ambassador to Israel?

Earlier, we reported that Trump has tapped former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as US ambassador to Israel.

Huckabee, an evangelical Christian, is a staunch supporter of Israel and defender of illegal Israeli settlements. He is also a proponent of Israeli annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Huckabee, 69, has criticised Biden for even applying mild pressure on Israel to moderate its conduct in its war on Gaza.

“If a person is pro-Israel, how can you be pro-Biden because the Biden administration has made it very clear they will make concessions to Hamas,” Huckabee said in an interview in March on News Nation.

Huckabee has led paid tour group visits to Israel for years, frequently advertising the trips on conservative-leaning news outlets.

David Friedman, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Israel in his first term, said he was “thrilled” by Trump’s selection of Huckabee.

Eight humanitarian organisations say Israel hasn’t met any metrics for US law compliance

At the Blinken-Austin letter’s 30-day deadline, eight humanitarian organisations assess that the Israeli government has not met any of the administration’s metrics for US law compliance on relief in Gaza.

The organisations are Refugees International, Anera, Care, Mercy Corps, NRC, Oxfam, MedGlobal and Save the Children.

The agencies published a scorecard on Israel’s compliance with US demands on humanitarian access. Across the board, they said, the Israeli government has failed to comply with US and international law on relief in the besieged coastal enclave.

US State Department says Israel not found in violation of US law on Gaza aid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter last month to Israel voicing alarm over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and setting a deadline of November 13 to comply with US law on permitting humanitarian assistance.

“We have not made an assessment that they are in violation of US law,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said when asked if Israel had met the demands.

“The overall humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to be unsatisfactory. These actions that we have seen, we think that these are steps in the right direction. We want to see more steps. We want to see these steps sustained over a significant period of time, and ultimately, we want to see these steps have a result on the situation.”

Israeli rights group says Israel failed to heed US Gaza aid requirements

Gisha – the Legal Center for Freedom of Movement says Israel has not met the requirements specified in a letter by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and, instead, there has been a “dramatic decrease” in the quantity of goods Israel has allowed into Gaza.

“The situation is particularly serious in the north of the Strip. Israel has implemented a plan to tighten the siege on the area, starving the population there and forcibly displacing them,” Gisha said in a statement.

“Even if Israel were to adhere to the US demands, this alone would not reverse the catastrophe in Gaza,” the group said.
