Here’s what happened today

We will be closing this live page soon. Here is a recap of today’s events:

  • Gaza’s Health Ministry has confirmed that 40 Palestinians were killed and 58 others wounded during the latest 24-hour reporting period.
  • Heavily armed and masked Israeli troops raided Al Jazeera’s bureau in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and imposed a 45-day closure in their latest push to curtail the network’s news coverage.
  • This move drew international condemnation, including from the president of Ireland and from the International Federation of Journalists.
  • An Israeli air strike has hit a home in the al-Alami area of the Jabalia camp, Gaza’s Civil Defence said, adding that four people were injured.
  • Internet services have been suspended in Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah due to ongoing Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel said.
  • The Islamic Resistance in Iraq says it carried out five attacks on Israeli territory in sympathy with Palestinians in Gaza.
  • Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general, Naim Qassem, announced that Hezbollah has entered an “open-ended battle of reckoning” with Israel, signalling an escalation in the ongoing conflict.

UN alarmed by closure of Al Jazeera’s West Bank office

The spokesman for the UN secretary-general says the organisation is “very concerned” about Israel’s order to shut down Al Jazeera’s Ramallah office.

“It’s another example of journalists not being allowed to do their work in this conflict”, Stephane Dujarric said.

“And journalists are the eyes and ears of the people in order to see what’s going on on the ground. We know and we’ve talked about the lack of journalistic access to Gaza. We’re worried about what the impact is here.”

Israeli military to continue escalation against Hezbollah

The Israeli military says it is going to intensify its attacks on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. It comes after Hezbollah fired nearly 150 rockets at several different locations across northern Israel.

On Sunday morning, we heard from a wide variety of Israeli officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Previously, throughout the last week, he had only released short statements, around one sentence each, saying that there was a new objective to the war and that it related to returning those evacuated Israelis back to those northern towns and settlements.

But in this statement, Netanyahu outlined that Hezbollah is now feeling the capabilities that Israel has and that they are not going to stop until that war goal is achieved.

The Israeli army’s chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, has said that they are going to continuously be striking Hezbollah until the message is clear and until the goal is also achieved.

Netanyahu examining siege plan for Hamas in north Gaza: Report

Israel is examining a plan to use siege tactics against Hamas in northern Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted by several Israeli media outlets as saying on Sunday.

Netanyahu’s office did not respond to a request for comment. The reports cited unnamed sources at a closed parliament committee meeting.

The plan, published by retired military commanders and floated by some parliament members this month, suggests Palestinian civilians would be instructed to evacuate northern Gaza, which would then be declared a closed military zone.

Israel has already divided the Strip in two with a military corridor, and refuses to let civilians who have already evacuated north Gaza return to their homes.

Israel’s refusal to pull its military out of this area, known as the Netzarim Corridor, has become a major sticking point in negotiations over a ceasefire.

Additionally, throughout the war, Israel has ordered the evacuation of civilians from nearly all areas of the Strip.

Last month, the UN estimated that 86 percent of Gaza was under Israeli army evacuation orders.

Mahmoud Abbas calls for ending Israeli occupation: Report

The meeting between the two sides took up the developments in the Palestinian territory and the region as well as bilateral ties between the two sides, the Wafa news agency reported.

Abbas renewed his call for ending Israeli attacks against Palestinians, a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction and holding a political process “that ends the occupation and achieves security, stability and peace for all in the region”.

With at least 70 people killed in Lebanon in Israeli attacks over the past week, the death toll in the country since last October has surpassed 740 in the worst Israel-Hezbollah flare-up since the 2006 war.

Archbishop of Canterbury calls for supporting Palestinian Christian family in West Bank

The Church of England’s spiritual head has called for supporting the Kisiya family, a Palestinian Christian family whose land in the al-Makhrour valley outside Bethlehem was taken over by Israeli settlers.

Justin Welby – who also heads the worldwide Anglican Communion – said in a statement “the oppression, violence and discrimination against Palestinians in the West Bank, including Christians, must cease”.

He added: “The Israeli government is not above the law and must stop acting otherwise. Steadfast Christian families such as the Kisiya family, whose ancestral land has been forcibly stolen from them, remain especially in my prayers. We continue to stand in prayerful solidarity with our Palestinian Christian sisters and brothers as they resist the injustice of occupation.”

In Gaza, ‘waste is everywhere’: UNRWA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has said that trash in Gaza keeps piling up as hundreds of thousands of people take shelter in an increasingly small portion of land in the besieged coastal enclave.

“This is a landfill site in Khan Younis,” said the UN agency, which provides relief to Palestinians, showing pictures of piles of trash. “Waste is everywhere. UNRWA and partners work to dispose of it, but the war and access restrictions pose severe challenges.”

Egypt fears ‘all-out’ regional war

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke ahead of an annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations, with a chorus of international powers calling on Israel and Hezbollah to step back from the brink.

“There is great concern about … the possibility of an escalation in the region leading to an all-out regional war,” Abdelatty told AFP news agency at UN headquarters, adding that the latest spike in violence “negatively impacted” ceasefire negotiations.

“But Egypt, along with Qatar and the United States, has complete determination and commitment to continue” efforts to broker a truce agreement, he said.

Qatar, Egypt and the United States have for months tried to secure a ceasefire and captives release deal in Gaza, which diplomats repeatedly said would help calm regional tensions.

“All the components of the deal are ready,” Abdelatty said. “The problem is the lack of political will on the Israeli side.”

Abdelatty also blamed Israel’s “provocative policies” for the intensified fighting with Hezbollah.

Lebanon orders school closures in conflict areas: State media

The media office of the Lebanese Education Ministry has announced that all educational institutions’ directors in areas affected by fighting which is preventing safe attendance must shut down their schools, the National News Agency (NNA) is reporting.

They are also directed to inform students and relevant educational districts of the closures, the NNA added.

Earlier, the Lebanese University announced the closure of its branches in the southern cities of Sidon, Nabatieh, and Tyre tomorrow.

These disruptions to Lebanon’s education system came after Israel launched massive strikes against the south last night, targeting 400 sites by its own account.
