WATCH: Who will protect civilians in war-torn Sudan?

Fighting between the army and its rival, the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, has killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions from their homes across much of the country.

Reports of torture and rape have surged during the last 17 months, leaving many people feeling desperate and helpless.

The United Nations wants to deploy peacekeeping troops, but the government says they are not welcome.

Al Jazeera’s Inside Story speaks to experts on what this rejection of intervention from outside means for the people of Sudan.

RSF withdraws some forces from Omdurman: Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Sudan, Hiba Morgan, reports that sources have said that the RSF has withdrawn some of its forces from Omdurman to reinforce troops in Khartoum through the Jebel Aulia Bridge.

“Dozens of cars were seen moving across the bridge following the army offensive against the RSF in Khartoum. This could tip the scale back on the RSF’s side,” Morgan added.

The RSF last weekend launched a large-scale offensive in el-Fasher after months of siege. El-Fasher is the only one of five state capitals in the vast Darfur region not yet in RSF hands.

Here’s what you need to know about the Sudan conflict

The war broke out on April 15, 2023, as the Sudanese army and RSF jostled for power in the wake of the October 2021 coup that toppled the civilian government.

Rivalry erupted between the two sides over an internationally backed plan to launch a new transition with civilian parties.

Under the plan, both the army chief al-Burhan and the RSF leader “Hemedti” were required to cede power.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 18,800 people have been killed and at least 33,000 injured since the conflict broke out in April 2023. But some estimates say the death toll could be as high as 150,000.

Due to the conflict, Sudan is also experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with more than half of Sudan’s population, 25.6 million people, facing acute hunger, according to OCHA.

About 8.1 million people in Sudan have also been internally displaced while about two million have been forced to flee the country since the conflict began.

‘People are fed up with the militia,’ says Khartoum resident

In an RSF-controlled area in Khartoum, one resident told Al Jazeera that they have been hearing “all types of heavy artillery” coming from all directions since 2am.

“We’re sitting with neighbours, anticipating the next event,” Augreis said.

She added that there is a general hope the army will retake the city as “people are fed up with the militia”.

Refugee chronicles: The long and lonely road from Sudan to France

Sudan’s displacement crisis has been called the world’s worst since the partition of India in 1947 displaced at least 15 million people.

Since war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, more than 10 million Sudanese have been displaced.

Some have taken to the roads towards the Mediterranean and Europe, joining uncounted millions from the world’s disaster zones. Like generations of Sudanese people fleeing past conflicts, they have often been smuggled in the backs of trucks.

But their journeys are getting quicker, taking weeks rather than, as in the past, months or years for those who went before them and usually stopped along the way to earn money in North African countries.

In the not-so-distant past, most Sudanese in Libya would work to send remittances home – a key part of the journey.

UN Secretary-General warns of ‘escalation’ to Sudan conflict

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern over “escalation” to Sudan’s army chief when they met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

“The Secretary-General expressed deep concern about the escalation of the conflict in the Sudan, which continues to have a devastating impact on the Sudanese civilians and risks a regional spillover,” said a UN readout of Guterres’s meeting with General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan.

Sudan has been high on the agenda at the UN’s meeting this week, as the dire humanitarian situation and refugee crisis dominated discussions on the war that broke out in April last year.

When did the war erupt and why?

The fighting broke out on April 15, 2023 due to a power struggle between the army chief and the country’s de factor ruler, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of paramilitary forces, the RSF, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti”.

The 17-month-long civil war has displaced more than 10 million people and driven parts of the country to extreme hunger or famine.

Diplomatic efforts by the United States and other powers have faltered, with the army refusing to attend talks last month in Switzerland.

Army takes control of three main bridges: Al Jazeera reporter

Reporting from Khartoum, Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan said the army has taken control of three main bridges, including two that connect the city of Omdurman with the capital.

“We know the army was able to take over the eastern part of Nile Bridge, that’s the bridge that connects the city of Omdurman to the city of Khartoum, and they’ve been advancing towards Nile Street, towards the presidential palace where there has also been heavy fighting reported,” said Morgan.

Military sources said the assault was “in the works for months”, said Morgan, against the din of artillery and fighter jets overhead.
