Violent clashes between Palestinian fighters and PA security forces reported

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report that clashes have occurred around the Jenin camp in the occupied West Bank.

Since early December, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has besieged the Jenin camp and cut off water and electricity as part of a crackdown on a coalition of armed groups that call themselves the Jenin Brigades.

The groups are affiliated with Palestinian factions such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and even Fatah, the party that controls the PA.

London police criticised for banning pro-Palestine march

The Metropolitan Police have banned a planned pro-Palestine march next week in London, sparking condemnation by pro-Palestinian groups who have called on the force to reverse its decision.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and coalition partners, including the Palestinian Forum in Britain, Friends of Al-Aqsa, the Stop the War Coalition, the Muslim Association of Britain and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament on Friday condemned police attempts to stop the march for Palestine from protesting, which was planned to take place outside the BBC headquarters on January 18.

In a statement, the march organisers noted that the ban came after the route had been confirmed with the police nearly two months ago and publicly announced on November 30.

On Thursday, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement saying the ban was introduced owing to the planned location for the protest deemed to be close to a synagogue.

The organisers of the march pointed out that there had not been a single incident of any threat to a synagogue during any of the previous marches.

The UN can end the Middle East conflict by welcoming Palestine as a member

The UN, on its 80th birthday in 2025, can mark the occasion by securing a lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East by welcoming the State of Palestine as the 194th UN member state.

The upcoming UN Conference on Palestine, set for June 2025, could be a turning point – a decisive, irreversible path towards peace in the Middle East.

The Trump administration would greatly serve America’s interests and the world’s by championing the two-state solution and a comprehensive Middle East peace deal at the gathering in New York in June.

Amid Israel’s shocking brutality in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, a small window of hope has nonetheless emerged.

Almost the entire world has coalesced around the two-state solution as the key to regional peace.

As a result, a comprehensive deal is now within reach.

Amid genocide, the tide is turning on Palestine

The suffering of the Palestinian people, which began with the Nakba and the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, reached brand new depths in the past 14 months.

More than 46,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and more than 110,000 injured in Israel’s continuing genocide in Gaza.

Tens of thousands of others are missing, arbitrarily detained, or known to be buried under the rubble of their destroyed homes.

Palestinians document the atrocities committed against their people by Israel one by one and share them with the world in real-time for everyone to see.

South Africa has launched a genocide case against Israel at the World Court, backed by a large number of countries, including Mexico, Brazil and Turkiye.

The ICC has also taken action against Israel, issuing arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The global public is also clear in its support for Palestinians, with tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protests, vigils and sit-ins held across the world, attracting support from millions of people from all walks of life, since the beginning of the genocide in October of 2023.

Legal cases against Israeli soldier accused of war crimes filed in Scandinavian countries

Earlier, we reported that a legal case against Boaz Ben David, an Israeli soldier accused of war crimes in Gaza, has been submitted to a Swedish court by the Hind Rajab Foundation.

The foundation now says that the Israeli staff sergeant and sniper who is visiting Sweden as a tourist may be attempting to flee the country via another Scandinavian nation.

In response, the foundation said it had filed legal complaints in Finland, Denmark, and Norway and called on the authorities in the respective countries “to take their responsibility and prevent Ben David from escaping justice”.

The Belgium-based Hind Rajab Foundation pursues legal action to seek justice for Palestinian victims of Israeli violence.

Trump’s envoy meets Qatar PM for ceasefire talks

US President-elect Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, has met Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in Doha to discuss ceasefire negotiations, a source briefed on the visit told the news agency Reuters.

On Tuesday, at a news conference held by Trump in Palm Beach, Florida, in the US, Witkoff said there had been “a lot of progress” when speaking about the Gaza ceasefire deal.

“I think that we’ve had some … really great progress, and I’m really hopeful that by the [presidential] inaugural, we’ll have some good things to announce on behalf of the president,” he said.

Trump, for his part, said at the news conference that if the captives are not back by the time he gets into office, “all hell will break out in the Middle East”.

Israeli army says it likely killed two kibbutz residents during 2023 attack

The Israeli military says that an internal inquiry has found it likely that it killed two kibbutz residents during the October 7, 2023, attack.

The inquiry, which heard testimonies from soldiers and civilians, sought to establish the cause of death for Tomer Eliaz-Arava and his mother, Dikla Arava, two residents of Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

The army said that according to the inquiry team’s assessment, 17-year-old Eliaz-Arava had first been abducted by Hamas and forced to go door to door to persuade residents to come outside, but after an hour and a half, she escaped.

Israeli soldiers saw “a suspicious figure”, whom they shot at, the inquiry stated.

The inquiry concluded that it is “highly likely” the figure was Eliaz-Arava and was killed due to a “misidentification.”

The statement said that in the meantime, Hamas abducted Eliaz-Arava’s mother, taking her in a vehicle towards Gaza.

“During the drive towards Gaza, the vehicle was fired upon from the rear,” resulting in her death.

“The inquiry suggests a reasonable possibility that Dikla Arava was killed by [Israeli army] fire,” the army said.

‘Catastrophic situation’: MSF sounds alarm about lack of fuel for Gaza hospitals

Doctors Without Borders, known by its French acronym MSF, is once again calling attention to the lack of much-needed fuel across hospitals in Gaza, saying at least three facilities are on the verge of closing down as they are no longer able to run their generators.

“This is a catastrophic situation for patients who rely on the power produced by generators to stay alive,” MSF said in a post on X.

It comes as the latest situation report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) echoed the same warning, saying the lives of patients and newborns are at “grave risk” in hospitals across Gaza.
