WHO chief calls attention to hypothermia risk for newborns in Gaza

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says on X that “more children are in danger” than those infants who have already frozen to death in the Gaza Strip.

Per our reporting, eight babies have died this winter season of hypothermia, amid a severe shortage of housing and supplies like winter clothing and blankets, in scarce supply in the Gaza Strip because of Israel’s restrictions on letting aid in.

“Every child deserves a healthy and safe start in life, but the children of Gaza are paying the price of war with their own lives”, Tedros wrote.

Fast facts: Who are Israeli settlers?

We have been reporting on a slew of Israeli settler attacks in the occupied West Bank – another instance of settler violence that has been increasing since Israel began its war on Gaza.

Here is a bit more information about settlers:

  • Settlers are Israeli citizens who live illegally on private Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
  • Israel started building settlements just after capturing the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip in the June 1967 Six-Day War.
  • Now, more than 700,000 settlers – 10 percent of Israel’s nearly 7 million population – live in 150 settlements and 128 outposts spread across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
  • Some settlers move to the occupied territory for religious reasons, while others moved due to the relatively lower cost of living or financial incentives offered by the Israeli government.
  • The government has openly funded and built settlements and the Israeli authorities give its settlers in the occupied West Bank some 20 million shekels ($5m) a year to monitor, report and restrict Palestinian construction in Area C – which is administered solely by Israel and comprises more than 60 percent of the West Bank.
  • The United Nations has condemned the settlements through multiple resolutions and votes.
  • But the US has provided diplomatic cover for Israel over the years, with Washington consistently using its veto power at the UN to protect Israel from diplomatic censure.

Israeli authorities seize land northeast of occupied Jerusalem

Israeli authorities have seized 262 dunums (262,000 square metres) of Palestinian land northeast of occupied Jerusalem, according to the Wafa news agency.

It cited the Jerusalem governorate as saying in a statement that the land is being taken for the benefit of a route that aims to provide more links with the Qalandiya airport.

Israeli human rights organisation Ir Amim also reported that the Israeli government is seeking to annex lands from the village of Jaba, northeast of Jerusalem, and add it to the area of influence of a nearby settlement.

Settlers had earlier reportedly taken over the lands and forced Palestinian residents to leave.

Israeli authorities have significantly ramped up their illegal seizures of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank since the start of the war on Gaza, also discussing prospects of constructing settlements in besieged northern Gaza.

Israeli authorities yet to decide on whether to send Mossad chief for talks: Reports

The head of the Israeli spy agency is not immediately expected to travel to Doha as mediated talks with Hamas continue over a potential agreement on Gaza, according to Israeli media reports.

An assessment of the situation is scheduled to take place tonight to understand whether there is a need for a prominent figure like Mossad chief David Barnea to attend the negotiations in Qatar, Channel 13 reported, citing Israeli officials.

The talks are progressing more slowly than expected but have not reached the point of breaking down, it said.

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported the Mossad director’s visit would depend on the response from Hamas.

Settlers attack Palestinian village in occupied West Bank: Reports

Israeli and Palestinian media outlets are reporting that Israeli settlers have raided the occupied West Bank village of Hajjah.

The Times of Israel reported that this evening, a message was posted on a WhatsApp group for a hardline Israeli group in the occupied West Bank, known as the Hilltop Youth, in which members were encouraged to “erase” the village of al-Funduq, which is near to Hajjah.

Footage that appeared in local media shows settlers surrounding a vehicle engulfed in flames.

The attack appears to be in retaliation for a shooting that occurred earlier today in which three Israelis were killed and eight others injured near the illegal West Bank settlement of Kedumim.

Israeli media outlets cited security officials as saying that at least two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at cars and a bus outside the settlement before fleeing the scene on Monday.

Israeli settlements are Jewish communities built on Palestinian land that has been taken by force from its owners. They are considered illegal under international law.

Roughly 700,000 Israeli settlers are living in at least 250 illegal settlements and outposts in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

Israel makes ‘no distinction’ for humanitarians in Gaza: UN

In Gaza, the Israeli military is not making a distinction for humanitarian workers, according to the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), speaking after Israel’s latest attack on a World Food Programme (WFP) aid convoy in the Gaza Strip.

“Humanitarian workers, whoever they are, have been regularly a target,” Philippe Lazzarini said in a post on X. “This blatant disregard cannot be the new norm.”

Cindy McCain, the executive director of the WFP, said it was “completely unacceptable” that the Israeli military again hit a vehicle carrying humanitarians in Gaza.

US envoy says Israeli army withdrawals from western Lebanon to continue until military fully out

US envoy Amos Hochstein says that he was happy to see the Israeli army withdraw from the western sector of Lebanon back to Israel.

In a news conference in Lebanon following meetings with top Lebanese officials, Hochstein said these withdrawals would continue until the Israeli army was completely out of the country.

He also said he expected all sides to respect the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that has been in force since late November.

“I have no reason not to expect that all parties – all parties – will remain committed to implementing the agreement that they agreed to,” he said.

Despite his assurances, Lebanese authorities have been accusing Israel of near-daily ceasefire violations, and reports indicate that Israel may intend to keep troops in Lebanon beyond the original 60-day period laid out for its withdrawal.

On Hezbollah’s side, chief Naim Qassem said yesterday that the group is ready to respond to what he termed Israeli ceasefire violations.
