Thousands evacuated as Palisades fire razes homes in Los Angeles

- Five people have been killed and more than 100,000 ordered to evacuate as wind-whipped wildfires spread across the densely populated Los Angeles metropolitan area, including the Hollywood Hills.
- Approximately 1,000 buildings have been destroyed in the well-to-do Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles, fire officials said, and another 1,000 structures destroyed or damaged in the foothills near Altadena and Pasadena, north of LA.
- According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), the fires began at 10:30am (18:30GMT) on Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, where nearly 1,200 hectares ( about 3,000 acres) were burned.
- The website poweroutage.us has signalled that nearly 1.5 million people are without electricity as a result of the fires, including 957,700 customers in Los Angeles County.
