Here’s what happened today

Before we close, here’s a recap of the latest updates:

  • At least 72 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza today, the majority of whom were killed in Gaza City.
  • Widespread global condemnation has erupted after Israel attacked Hamas’s senior leadership in the Qatari capital, Doha, with India, France, Russia and others denouncing the strike.
  • Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said that the country is forming a “collective response” to Israeli “bullying”, after decrying the “cowardly” attack and saying there was no warning of the strike from the United States.
  • Before that, PM Netanyahu said Qatar should kick the Hamas delegation out of its territory, seeming to threaten more strikes if it should fail to do so.
  • Israeli warplanes carried out more bombings of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other locations around the country, killing at least 35, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
  • Several UN bodies and groups, including Amnesty International, have expressed concern over Israel’s forced evacuation order demanding one million people leave Gaza City for a so-called humanitarian zone in the south, warning that the already overcrowded area lacks basic services.

US Muslim rights group calls for GHF to be expelled from Gaza

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a US Muslim and Arab rights group, has called for the GHF to be removed from Gaza following a report identifying several people who worked security at aid sites in Gaza as members of a far-right anti-Muslim motorcycle club.

“BBC News has confirmed the identities of 10 members of the Infidels Motorcycle Club, an anti-Muslim biker gang, working in Gaza for UG Solutions, a private contractor providing security at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution points,” CAIR said in a statement.

“Infidels MC, established by Iraq war veterans in 2006, see themselves as modern Crusaders, using the Crusader cross as their symbol. The gang is currently hosting anti-Muslim hate speech on its Facebook page and has previously held a pig roast “in defiance of” the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.”

GHF has come under fire countless times since its inception earlier this year, even by an ex-employee. Critics say that it exists as nothing more than a trap leading starving Palestinians to their deaths at the hands of Israeli soldiers.

Israeli strike on Qatar demonstrates ‘double standard’ in international community

Middle East analyst Adam Shapiro says that Israel’s strike on Qatar is not likely to result in serious consequences, since Israeli violations of international law have become routine and rarely incurred consequences.

“By not asking or not informing the Americans early, Netanyahu could avoid getting a ‘no’ and then just deal with the consequences after. Israel has consistently been rewarded for dealing with consequences after its attacks or its actions with a double standard in the international community,” he said.

“What others can’t get away with, Israel consistently gets away with.”

‘We’re expecting a response to Israeli attacks in the next few days’

We’re seeing increasing emphasis by the countries wanting some sort of unified regional response [to Israel].

We’re expecting it in the next couple of days, we understand some sort of regional meeting will be held here in Qatar. We know that the countries have pulled together their own legal team.

They are looking at all legal avenues to have Netanyahu tried for breaking international law.

So, the pressure is definitely mounting on Israel, not only from here in Qatar, but obviously on a regional and a wider international level … it’s going to be very interesting indeed.

But, of course, there are huge questions about exactly what can be done. What is this response going to look like when, seemingly, Israel continues to act with impunity, with this targeted assassination attempt here in Qatar?

Trump held heated phone call with Netanyahu: Report

The US president told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his decision to target Hamas inside Qatar wasn’t wise, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing unnamed senior administration officials.

Trump made the comments during what the Journal described as a heated phone call yesterday, after the attack.

According to the newspaper, Netanyahu responded that he had a brief window to launch the strikes and took the opportunity. A second call between the men later on Tuesday was cordial, with Trump asking Netanyahu if the attack had proven successful, the Journal reported.

Qatar ‘strongly condemns’ Netanyahu’s earlier comments on hosting Hamas

Qatar has issued a new condemnation of the Israeli PM after he earlier said that the country must expel Hamas members.

Qatar called them a “shameful attempt … to justify the cowardly attack that targeted Qatari territory, as well as the explicit threats of future violations of state sovereignty”.

Netanyahu’s remarks did imply that more attacks could come in the future. “I say to Qatar and all nations who harbour terrorists, you either expel them or you bring them to justice. Because if you don’t, we will”, he said.

“Netanyahu is fully aware that the hosting of the Hamas office took place within the framework of Qatar’s mediation efforts requested by the United States and Israel,” Qatar continued.

“He is also fully aware of the office’s role in facilitating numerous exchanges and ceasefires, which have been widely acknowledged and appreciated by the international community and have brought relief to Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages in desperate need of basic humanitarian relief from the ruthlessness that has ensued since October 7th,” it added.

“Such statements are hardly surprising coming from an individual who relies on extremist rhetoric to win elections and is wanted for international justice, facing mounting sanctions on a daily basis – factors that only deepen his isolation on the global stage.

WATCH: Palestinians being forcibly displaced from Gaza City to al-Mawasi

More Palestinians are fleeing southwards after the Israeli military, for the first time, ordered the full evacuation of Gaza City yesterday.

There’s a stream of people making the nearly 30km [19-mile] journey south using the coastal al-Rashid Street. While some Palestinians refuse to be forcibly displaced, others see little option but to flee.

They’re heading for al-Mawasi, a barren strip of land on the Mediterranean coast that’s been repeatedly bombed.

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports on the conditions the in al-Mawasi area:

Macron condemns Israeli strikes on Qatar, calls for ceasefire talks to resume

French President Emmanuel Macron said he spoke with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani after Israel’s strikes in Doha, calling them “unacceptable” and a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and security.

In a post on X, Macron said negotiations must quickly resume for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of captives still held by Hamas. He praised Qatar’s mediation efforts, adding that “this permanent state of war in Gaza cannot continue”.

Macron reiterated France’s support for a two-state solution and said Paris is working with partners ahead of a conference on the issue in New York on September 22.

Russia slams Israeli attack on Qatar as ‘gross violation’ of international law

“Russia considers this incident a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent state, and a step leading to further escalation and destabilisation of the situation in the Middle East,” the Russian Foreign Ministry says in a statement, saying that the strike undermines efforts towards peace in the region.

“Such methods of fighting those whom Israel considers its enemies and opponents deserve the strongest condemnation.”

Starmer says Israel must stop ‘manmade famine’ in comments to Israeli president

The British prime minister’s office has said that PM Keir Starmer expressed “huge concern” to Israeli President Isaac Herzog over the situation in Gaza and urged Israel to change course.

Reuters quoted a Downing Street spokesperson, who said Starmer said that Israel “must stop the manmade famine from worsening further by letting aid in and halting their offensive operations”.

The British leader, however, has come under fire for thus far refusing to end arms transfers to Israel, and for inviting Herzog to visit the UK in the first place.

Visual investigation concludes munitions likely to blame for attacks on Sumud Flotilla

The open-source intelligence group Bellingcat says that an initial investigation into a series of explosions on vessels in the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza points towards incendiary munitions, contradicting denials by officials and lending credence to the flotilla’s claims that they have been the victim of numerous drone attacks.

“The largest aid flotilla in history has been attacked twice in two days whilst in port in Tunisia. Open source analysis suggests an incendiary munition is to blame,” the group said.

Tunisian officials said an explosion on a vessel on September 8 in Tunis was the result of a lighter or a cigarette butt, but videos show a flaming object descending from above.

“The flaming object must have been deployed from an aerial platform,” the group said, adding that videos of the incident include background sounds “consistent with that of a drone”.

The report says that munitions allegedly used in both attacks, one in Tunis on September 8 and another 24 hours later, show features that are “common, but not exclusive, to some models of Israeli hand grenades”.

WHO warns against Gaza forced evacuation order, hospitals operating as ‘massive trauma wards’

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is “appalled” by Israel’s latest forced evacuation order demanding one million people leave Gaza City for a so-called humanitarian zone in the south.

WHO warned the area lacks the services to support those already there, let alone new arrivals, including adequate health care. Nearly half of Gaza’s remaining functional hospitals are in Gaza City, accounting for more than a third of hospital beds and half of ICU capacity across the Strip.

These facilities cannot afford to be lost, the agency said, noting hospitals are already overwhelmed and functioning as “massive trauma wards” under constant bombardment.

WHO urged the international community to act by demanding a ceasefire, upholding humanitarian law, ensuring protection for civilians and medical workers, and allowing the unhindered entry of aid.

“This catastrophe is human-made, and the responsibility rests with us all”, it said.

Amnesty International says forced displacement in Gaza ‘unlawful and inhumane’

The rights watchdog says that Israel’s mass evacuation orders for Gaza City have compounded genocidal conditions in the Strip, where Israeli authorities continue to severely restrict humanitarian assistance and Israeli attacks kill many civilians.

“The order issued yesterday morning by the Israeli military for the mass displacement of Gaza City residents is cruel, unlawful, and further compounds the genocidal conditions of life that Israel is inflicting on Palestinians,” Heba Morayef, regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said in a statement.

The press release quotes a medical worker in Gaza describing the impossible dilemmas of another round of forced displacement.

“I don’t want to leave my patients, the little children whose bodies are too frail to deal with yet another displacement, but I don’t know what to do. It’s like having to choose between two deaths: death by bombardment or the slow death of displacement, not knowing where to go,” they said.

“I have already been displaced on 15 occasions; I couldn’t sleep a wink for the past few nights because of the heavy bombardment nearby, and we’re still trying to go to our work to treat the children, but we have collapsed.”

India’s Modi condemns Israeli strike on Qatar

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he spoke with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and conveyed “deep concern” about yesterday’s Israeli attack on Doha.

“India condemns the violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar. We support resolution of issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and avoiding escalation”, Modi said in a post on X.

The Indian foreign office had yesterday criticised the strike but stopped short of using the word “condemn” – a term New Delhi has rarely applied to Israel, with which ties have deepened dramatically in recent years.

Israel arrests head of Muslim cemetery organisation: Palestinian media

The Palestinian news service Wafa has reported that Israeli authorities detained director of the Islamic Cemeteries Committee in Jerusalem, Ahmad al-Dajani, and that he has been taken to an unknown destination.

Wafa reports that al-Dajani was detained by Israeli forces while walking on Salah al-Din Street in Jerusalem, an act the news service says is part of a wider crackdown on Muslim authorities and institutions that play an important role in upholding Islamic history and culture in the city.

Qatar says no confirmation on status of lead Hamas negotiator

Asked about the status of Hamas’s chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, Al Thani told CNN that “there is no official declaration” as of yet.

He said that a 22-year-old Qatari security officer was among those killed in the attack, which the country has denounced as a serious violation of its sovereignty.

“We are trying to identify if there is any other one missing,” said Al Thani. “There are Qataris who are in a very dangerous situation.”
