Dolls wrapped in shrouds outside Swedish Parliament honour children killed in Gaza

Pro-Palestinian activists organised a symbolic event this evening in front of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm to commemorate the children killed in Gaza.

Outside the parliament building, wrapped in shrouds drenched in red paint, were placed over the Palestinian flag, in a scene symbolising the children who have been reported killed by Israel since October 7, 2023.

According to the organisers, the event aimed to highlight Sweden’s continued arms trade, despite repeated calls from the UN and the international community to stop exporting weapons to Israel during the war.

Al Jazeera speaks with Turkish foreign minister

Here are a few of Hakan Fidan’s key quotes, delivered in an interview in Doha ahead of tomorrow’s Arab-Islamic summit:

  • “Türkiye has condemned the attack in the strongest terms. We are engaged and support Qatar on this matter.
  • “As for the Israeli threats in the region, we are engaging in active discussions with all our friends to address this matter.
  • “The situation is not just a matter of an Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There is an occupation of Palestine and an ongoing genocide in Gaza. Israel is acting with an expansionist mindset. Arab and Islamic countries must stand against Israel and mobilise the international community to confront it.
  • “The greatest problem in the region is Israel’s expansion. Behind this lies Israel’s aim to enlarge its territories and establish a ‘Greater Israel’. The second objective is to weaken, fragment and destabilise regional states, Syria being one of them, alongside others.
  • “The Gulf states, Turkiye and the United States all have interlinked relations, and President [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan’s relationship with President Trump is excellent. But in the American system, when it comes to relations with Israel, there is an exceptional situation: this relationship takes precedence over all others. That damages America’s standing in the region and frustrates its friends here.
  • “Nevertheless, the president of Türkiye speaks at every level about Israel’s crimes, its killing of civilians and its expansionist policies. These policies are not only destabilising the region, they also undermine global security and contribute to the collapse of the international order. This reflects a crisis in the American political system itself, one it has not been able to overcome.”

Spain’s Vuelta a Espana cycle race ends early as police, pro-Palestine protesters clash

The finale of the cycling grand tour ended prematurely earlier today after pro-Palestine protesters clashed with riot police.

The protests – targeting the Israel-Premier Tech team over the war in Gaza – escalated when demonstrators knocked down barriers and surged onto the road during the last leg of the prestigious race in Madrid.

“Crowds ended up flooding onto the street, pushing down the barriers and clashing with police dramatically,” journalist Lily Mayers told Al Jazeera from the Spanish capital. She said that police also deployed tear gas.

Earlier, Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, expressed “admiration for the Spanish people mobilising for just causes like Palestine”.

Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida blamed Sanchez for “instigating the protests”.

Israeli air strikes intensify in Gaza City, UNRWA shelters and clinics among targeted buildings

Israeli air strikes in Gaza City are intensifying, forcing more people to “head into the unknown”, says Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

“Only in the past four days, 10 UNRWA buildings have been hit in #Gaza City. This includes seven schools and two clinics currently used as shelters for thousands of displaced people,” Lazzarini said on X.

“We were forced to stop health care in Beach Camp, the only health care available north of Wadi Gaza.
Our vital water & sanitation services are now only at half capacity,” he said.

Qatar PM blasts Israel, appreciates Arab, Islamic support ahead of summit

Doha, Qatar – Arab and Islamic states have condemned Israel’s “barbaric” attack on Qatar and will support Doha in the measures it will take to safeguard its sovereignty, says Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

“We appreciate the solidarity of brotherly Arab and Islamic countries and friendly countries from the international community that condemned this barbaric Israeli attack,” Sheikh Al Thani said on Sunday. “It expressed its full support for us and the legitimate legal measures we will take to preserve the sovereignty of our country.”

The Qatari prime minister made the comments as foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries convened in Doha before their leaders hold an emergency summit on Monday in response to Israel’s attack last week.

Arab, Islamic states will not forge ‘collective security overnight’

Political analyst Marwan Bishara says expectations should remain low for tomorrow’s Arab-Islamic summit, even if the event itself is an important way for the region to show a united front.

“I don’t think those who have been quiet, indifferent, impotent, cynical the past two years have suddenly found epiphany,” Bishara told Al Jazeera. “It doesn’t work that way with states. They are not going to find their collective security and defence overnight. That’s going to take time.”

Nevertheless, he noted what he considered to be several promising developments towards regional security, including the US’s vote condemning Israel’s attack in Doha at the UN Security Council, Washington’s guarantee to Doha that such an attack would not repeat, and US insistence that Qatar continue its mediation role.

“I think all of these things are important signs, and I think also the idea that the Arab world is coming together at the end of this kind of three-day marathon is important,” said Bishara.

Rubio’s Jerusalem trip ‘cannot be mistaken for diplomacy’

Images of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio performing prayers alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at Jerusalem’s Western Wall as Israeli attacks continue to hammer Gaza is not going to “bode well for diplomacy”, says political analyst Marwan Bishara.

“Gaza is being pummelled, its residential towers destroyed by Israeli-American bombs. The symbolism there cannot be mistaken for diplomacy,” Bishara told Al Jazeera.

“It’s not going to be looked at kindly,” he added. “It’s not going to be seen as diplomacy. It’s going to be seen as some kind of a religious war of sorts launched by the US and Israel. So that certainly does not bode well for diplomacy.”

Israel’s Herzog warns against ‘burning bridges’ with Arab partners

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has said the country must not “forsake” its ties with regional allies, who are among those meeting in Doha in a show of solidarity in response to Israel’s recent attack in Qatar.

In comments carried by The Times of Israel, Herzog said there are many Arab countries with which Israel has “extensive and significant ties”, including economic ties, that it should preserve.

“They are part of the Western-facing world in which we seek to remain, and in these countries there is also a large and important public supportive of Israel, who yearn to hear our voice,” claimed Herzog at a memorial event for deceased Israeli leaders, according to the newspaper.

“Therefore, we must act diplomatically and with public diplomacy, with purpose and determination, not neglecting any arena, speaking with everyone, and being proactive,” he said. “We must not forsake our ties. We must not burn our bridges.”
