Here’s what happened today

This live page will be closing soon, but our coverage will continue on a new page.

Here are some of the day’s top developments:

  • Israeli forces have killed at least 254 people across Lebanon, in the country’s most devastating day of conflict after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
  • Iranian officials say the US and Israel have reneged on agreed terms by claiming that Lebanon was not included in the truce deal.
  • The White House has dismissed Iran’s 10-point proposal, less than 24 hours after Trump said it was a workable basis on which to negotiate.
  • Israeli forces have killed Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Wishah in a drone strike in Gaza.
  • The IRGC Navy has announced transit routes that ships could take to avoid sea mines after promising to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as part of the ceasefire.

Lebanon’s most devastating day of the war so far

Israel says it targeted 100 locations in fewer than 10 minutes.

What remains to be seen, of course, is what the regional response will be.

Hezbollah issued a statement describing Israeli attacks across Lebanon as war crimes targeting innocent civilians. It said that it only strengthened its resolve to continue fighting the enemy and establish security in Lebanon.

So it’s a tone of defiance and determination in the face of this enormous wave of Israeli air strikes across the country today.

Hezbollah, in its statement, also cited its understanding that the agreement did include Lebanon, and that was at the request of Iran.

Then later on this afternoon, there was a statement from the speaker of the Iranian parliament, again stating that they believe that the agreement had been violated.

Israeli forces launch another attack on Beirut

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic say Israeli forces have carried out another attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut.

This comes after Israeli forces bombed the southern Lebanese towns of Safad al-Battikh, Majdal Selem, Chaqra and Kherbet Selem.

Trump administration signals it is mulling NATO withdrawal after Iran war

The Trump administration is signalling that it may withdraw from NATO, citing the alliance’s failure to back it up in its Iran attacks.

At a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt framed the US and Israel’s war on Iran as a “test” – and made it clear that the alliance had failed.

Trump is preparing to have a “frank and candid conversation” with the head of NATO, Mark Rutte, Leavitt told reporters.

The US president has long had a mixed relationship with NATO. He successfully pressured allies to up their defence spending, but also threatened to use US military force to seize Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.

With Iran on the back burner, Trump has again set his sights on NATO.

IRGC Navy announces alternative Strait of Hormuz routes to avoid mines

Iranian state media is quoting the IRGC Navy as announcing alternative traffic routes in the Strait of Hormuz to help ships avoid possible sea mines.

In a statement carried by ISNA news agency, the forces said all ships intending to cross the strait should, in coordination with the IRGC Navy, take the following routes:

  • Entry: From the Sea of Oman to the north of Larak Island, and then continuing towards the Gulf.
  • Exit: From the Gulf and passing south of Larak Island, and then continuing towards the Sea of Oman.

Oman condemns Israeli attacks on Lebanon

Oman’s Foreign Ministry has expressed its “strongest denunciation” of Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

The attacks represent “war crimes and flagrant violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty, the principles of international law, and the United Nations Charter”, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Oman also expressed “its utmost concern over the fall of a large number of victims as a result of these brutal attacks”, and said the international community must act to “hold Israel fully accountable”.

Significant that JD Vance will lead US negotiations in Pakistan

It’s significant that the US vice president is flying back early from Hungary, where he was attending the election, to now head the negotiating team in Pakistan.

And it’s significant because the negotiations to date have been led by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, the president’s two close advisers.

The Iranians had made clear their preference was for JD Vance because they had been, in their eyes, betrayed while negotiating with the two advisers on at least two occasions in the past, where the US struck Iran in the middle of negotiations.

It will be Vance leading the negotiation team – not the secretary of state, and not the two advisers. And this is a slight chink, perhaps, in terms of the US moving towards what Iran would like to see, rather than the way it had been practised in the past.

Iranian official says will ‘punish’ Israel for ‘crime’ in Lebanon

A senior official in Iran has told Al Jazeera that the country will “punish Israel in response to the crime it committed in Lebanon and the violation of the ceasefire terms”.

“The ceasefire includes the region, and Israel is known for breaking promises and will only be deterred by bullets”, the official said.

Iran’s Fars news agency, quoting an unnamed military source, says Iran is preparing a response to Israel’s violation of the ceasefire.

We’ll bring you more on this as details come in.

Iraq’s PM speaks with Macron about sustaining ceasefire

Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has spoken on the phone with Macron about “the importance of working to sustain the ceasefire”, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office has said.

According to the Iraqi statement, the two leaders also discussed the “painful attacks that Lebanon was subjected to today and their repercussions on regional stability, stressing the need to work to stop these attacks and protect civilians”.

The pair also talked about the recent “killing of a French officer” in Iraq, which has been drawn into the wider conflict in recent weeks.

Al-Sudani noted on the call that Iraqi security forces had arrested “those involved” in the drone attack near Erbil, which resulted in the death of the soldier, who was in Iraq as part of an international coalition against ISIL (ISIS).

Israel’s attacks on Lebanon part of a pattern

JD Vance also said that the issue of Lebanon was not part of the deal that the US agreed to.

So once again, there’s this degree of confusion.

One pattern we have seen is that before a ceasefire takes place, Israel launches massive attacks on whatever the target would be at that particular time.

Israel is putting in, as it were, the last punches in the conflict before it is forced or decides to step back.

Whether there’s going to be US pressure on Israel to follow through on an agreement not to strike in Lebanon, that’s another question.

Vance apparently indicated this will not be the case.

World reacts to ‘brutal’ Israeli attacks on Lebanon

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called the attacks on densely populated areas a “full-fledged war crime”.

Hezbollah said it had a “right” to respond to the attacks.

Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the “brutal series” of Israeli attacks that killed hundreds of people.

Lebanon’s inclusion in ceasefire necessary for lasting peace: Macron

The ceasefire was the “best possible” decision, and including Lebanon in it is the best path to peace, French President Macron has told Iranian and US leaders.

Macron expressed his hope that the ceasefire will be “fully respected” by each party “across all areas of confrontation, including in Lebanon”.

“This is a necessary condition for the ceasefire to be credible and lasting,” he said.

Any agreement will also have to address “the concerns raised by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes”, as well as “its regional policy” and its “actions obstructing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz”, Macron added.

“This is how a strong and lasting peace can be built.”

Macron has long opposed military action against Iran, and previously called suggestions of joint military action to open the Strait of Hormuz “unrealistic”.

Iran’s 10-point proposal included Lebanon, Yemen

Just under 24 hours ago, I was sitting here reading out Trump’s social media post in which he agreed to a two-week ceasefire.

And he made very clear this was on the basis of the 10 points that the Iranians had given the United States, which he said was the working basis for a solution.

He also said that almost all of the various points of past contention between the US and Iran have been agreed to.

Now, you’ve got the White House press secretary saying this is not the case. There was, in fact, another 10-point plan that Trump was referring to, not the original, which everybody thought he was referring to.

So, a great degree of confusion here as to specifically what Trump was agreeing to when he agreed to the ceasefire, because one of those 10 points that the Iranians had said was to curtail Israel’s operations in southern Lebanon, and also, operations against its other allies, a reference to Yemen.

So, these were the basic points of the Iranian 10-point plan.

So we actually are not sure exactly what the president and his team are talking about.

Major point of difference appears to be Israel’s actions in Lebanon

The major point of difference at the moment would appear to be Israel’s actions in Lebanon.

As part of the 10-point plan that Trump said he agreed to, there would be a cessation of Israeli hostilities in south Lebanon.

But now the White House and the vice president are saying that that is not the case and that was not part of what they agreed to.

So, great confusion, and will only be cleared up when everybody says exactly what they’re talking about and what proposal they agreed to in the first place.

Red Cross ‘outraged’ over deaths, destruction in Lebanon

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says it is “outraged by the devastating death and destruction in densely populated areas across Lebanon”.

In a statement that did not say who was responsible for the attacks, the ICRC said it is working with local partners to respond to the influx of casualties at overwhelmed Lebanese medical facilities.

“People across Lebanon were holding their breath for a ceasefire agreement, but a wave of deadly strikes plunged the country into panic and chaos,” said Agnes Dhur, the head of the ICRC’s delegation in Lebanon.

“Many who had begun thinking of the moment when they might return to their homes have been rushing to streets and hospitals, searching for missing loved ones or seeking a safety that feels increasingly out of reach.”

How Pakistan managed to get the US and Iran to a ceasefire

Islamabad – Just under 90 minutes remained until Trump’s deadline to destroy Iran’s “civilization” late on Tuesday.

He soon said he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran after almost six weeks of bombing. Iran’s FM Araghchi confirmed the ceasefire on X.

Amid confusion over what exactly was agreed to, there was a common glue that bound both Trump’s statement and Araghchi’s assertions: acknowledgement of Pakistan’s central role as the mediator that managed to persuade warring nations deeply distrustful of each other back to the negotiating table.

Lebanon declares day of mourning after Israeli attacks

Lebanon has declared Thursday a day of mourning following Israeli attacks that have killed more than 200 and injured more than 1,000 across the country.

Prime Minister Salam’s office said he was engaged in diplomatic outreach “to mobilise all of Lebanon’s political and diplomatic resources to stop the Israeli killing machine”.

Public administrations will be closed, and flags lowered to mark the day.
