Will Arteta’s intensity drive Arsenal to glory or another choke?

Arsenal’s quadruple hunt was halved earlier this month, and now they are struggling to hold on to a lead in the Premier League.

Their end-of-season stumble has raised questions about manager Mikel Arteta, who is being questioned alongside his team.

The Spaniard struggles to hide his emotions, particularly in defeat, and Al Jazeera understands that this is an area of concern for certain members of Arsenal’s hierarchy who believe the former midfielder’s intensity at crucial moments could be holding his side back.

The slump, marked by the first time Arsenal have been beaten in successive games in this campaign, has plunged the club’s long-suffering fans into a bout of soul-searching.

The North Londoners have not won a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, raising doubts about their ability to finally land silverware.

Guardiola: ‘In the end, it’s the fine margins’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola dissected the match with Sky Sports: “It’s a good advert for the Premier League. They don’t allow you go through your process,” he said.

“They are so aggressive and good in the duels. One of the most competitive teams I ever faced in my career in terms of duels, one-versus-one [and] long balls.

“[Declan] Rice on the second balls is fantastic. They didn’t make us build up. We had momentum; they had momentum. We had chances; they had chances. In the end, it’s the fine margins.

“[It was] two teams with really top managers. And top, top players from both sides. But now it’s every three days, it’s so demanding.

“But the reality is just one thing: they are top of the league. One [goal] ahead on goal difference.

“We have to enjoy it, celebrate it, take the good things, but don’t lose the focus. In three days, we go to Burnley.”

Arteta: ‘We were close, but not close enough

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta caught up with Sky Sports: “When you don’t [take the chances] and they have the individual quality, that’s the risk,” he said. “Because you lose the game. I don’t think there was any difference between the two teams.

“There is an element of luck, whether the ball goes in or not. The second goal, the ball gets deflected and it goes to [Erling] Haaland. There is an individual quality as well, to be cool, precise and ruthless. You have to be there.

“You can see right to the end of the game the attitude of the team. We could have been more composed in certain moments, but we certainly took the game to areas where we wanted it.

“We knew we had a big chance to win it. We were close, but not close enough. But now we have to reset.

“We lost an opportunity today, a big one. But there are still another five [matches] to go. There are still a lot of positives [to take from] today.”

Odegaard: ‘We wanted to come here and get a result’

Sky Sports spoke with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard: “Disappointed not to win. We wanted to come here and get a result. We played a good game and pressed them well. We had some good moments.

“Especially in the second half, we looked dangerous in front of goal. It is the small margins that can decide a game. That is why we go home with nothing.

“That is football at this level. Two teams going like this head-to-head, it was always going to be tough. We did some really good things. We just need to bounce back and push till the very end.

“I thought the high press was really good. Felt like we would regain the ball and look dangerous. Of course, they have lots of quality. Apart from the two goals, we did really well.

“We did lack some composure at times, so overall a decent performance. We just have to learn from that and move on to the next game.

“It was a tight call, but I felt OK in the game. Good to be back [in the starting lineup] and hope I can keep with the team till the end.

“There is always pressure and noise. That is part of being a football player at this level. We continue to stay focused on ourselves.”

Silva: ‘Small margins made the difference’

Sky Sports spoke with Man City’s Bernardo Silva as well: “Very big [result],” he said. “It puts us in a position that, if we win the game in hand [against Burnley on Wednesday], we are on the same [number of] points. If you looked back at two weeks ago, it didn’t look very likely.

“Erling [Haaland] was fantastic today. It is not easy with centre-backs that strong. He fought like an animal.

“I thought we were very good until we made the mistake [Gianluigi Donnarumma’s blunder to gift Kai Havertz a goal in the 18th minute]. It changed the mood a bit.

“The second half was tough. It looked like were in control, but it felt like they were very dangerous at times. They had two big chances in a row.

“Small margins made the difference, but overall, a good game was played. I am really proud [of the team].

“It is a long season. A lot of small details didn’t go our way this season. Not only decisions and unlucky plays, but we missed a lot of chances. We had a lot of games we should have won. Today it went our way.

“I made the decision [to leave the club] a long time ago. It has been emotional all season. I just want to finish on a good end with trophies. I am doing my best for this club.”

Haaland: ‘Every game is a final’

Manchester City’s Haaland is named player of the match. Here is what he had to say to Sky Sports:

  • On scoring the game-winning goal: “Yeah, I was quite happy. It was a great moment for me.”
  • On his duel with Gabriel: “It is always like this. A lot of fighting in these kind of things.”
  • On the rest of the season: “Every game is a final [from here on]. We have to focus on [our] recovery [now] and prepare for Burnley [on Wednesday]. It is as important as this game. We have to stay humble and focus on the next game.”
  • On whether Gabriel’s head butt deserved a red card: “I think if I fell on the floor, I think it would be a red card. I am not sure as I haven’t seen it yet. It is what it is. I won’t fall on the floor as easy as that. Not sure why I got a yellow though.”

A look at the standings

With this result, Arsenal continue to hold first place with 70 points after 33 matches.

City close the gap in second place with 67 points after 32 matches, but crucially have a game in hand.

If they win their next match against Burnley, and by at least two goals, they will displace Arsenal as league leaders, on account of having a better goal difference.

City narrow gap on title leaders Arsenal

After going into the match with a six-point deficit against Arsenal, City do the needful at home to make it a three-point title race.

They arguably deserved it, having dominated much of the match statistics. In the end, they had 12 shots to Arsenal’s eight and their possession was 59 percent.

The Etihad serenades the City players, and Arsenal know they have their work cut out as we head into the final stretch of the season.

Haaland’s 65th-minute goal proved to be the ultimate difference.

Havertz goes just over!

Was that the moment! Trossard delivers a sumptuous cross from the right side.

Havertz rises high in the goal area, and with no marker around him, he directs his header towards goal.

But he ends up getting it just over the bar as Donnarumma leaps high to cover. That was perilously close for the Gunners!

Arsenal throwing the kitchen sink

The Gunners have flooded the City half as they look to sneak through a last-gasp equaliser.

But the hosts have been resolute so far in defence, though they gave a late corner to Arsenal.

The corner is sent in from the right side, but City are able to repel the danger.
