Howe: ‘Losing games isn’t good enough’

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe spoke with Sky Sports: “It was our best defensive performance for a long time. We looked solid, we looked good.

“There were some good bits with the ball as well in both halves. We didn’t create enough and when we did, we didn’t take them and they took theirs from distance form a corner.

“It’s another frustrating defeat for us but a better performance.

“We had defensive resilience, a lot of blocked shots, we didn’t have the look of a team that were going to concede, whereas in recent weeks, we have.

“There were some good individual performances, the team structure was good, so it was better in that aspect. Off the ball, our best performance in a while.

“But we’ve got to try and put it together. Losing games isn’t good enough.”

Arteta: ‘We have to be more dominant with the ball’

Arteta: “We got the result we wanted, and we are very happy. At one-nil, it felt like they made 10 subs. At the end we got through it.

“There were [good] moments in the first and second half. We had so much discipline and courage, and great habits defensively.

“We have to be more dominant with the ball, in many areas. In the ways we didn’t finish, given the amount of times we get into positions.

“The end product needs to improve. The way they defended and the physicality they have.

“The ball has to arrive to the right player in the tight position. Then the chances of this happening are bigger.

“Half-time was clear, go get the second one. We had openings. It was another debatable red card [Nick Pope denying Gyokeres] after the last match against Manchester City.

“[On Eberechi Eze and Kai Havertz being subbed off due to injury] Let’s see. At the moment, they have to be looked after. One down and four [more matches] to go [this season]. Now, we have to go to Madrid [for the Champions League semifinal against Atletico on Wednesday].”

Odegaard: ‘We have to fight [for] every single game’

Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard caught up with Sky Sports after the match: “It was tough. It was [a] very intense and physical [match], especially for me playing 90 [minutes].

“We did everything we could and got the win. It is good to get the three points.

“[On scoring off a corner] I mean we practice it all for first and second balls. That is our quality. We can score in so many different ways. I thought we were quite dangerous at times. Great finish from [Eberechi] Eze as well.

“I mean the schedule is crazy but it is what is it. We have to keep going. It is the end of the season, and we have to fight [for] every single game.

“We now look to the next game and hope to win again. [On going back on top] Yeah that is where we want to be. It [the title race] is going to go all the way to the end.”
