‘We were not lucky today’

Some reaction from the Barcelona camp now, with coach Hansi Flick giving his thoughts to TNT Sport.

“We were not lucky today. We had a good match in the first half. We got the red card and directly came the goal. In the second half, we played well with one player less, and then they scored the goal.”

On next weeks second leg: “We have the quality to come back, and this is our goal; now we have to think positive. I am proud about my team.”

‘It shows the work that everyone has been doing and the togetherness’

Atleti’s Ademola Lookman has given his reaction to TNT Sports. This is what he had to say:

“A good result. A good performance from the team, especially not to concede; that shows the work that everyone has been doing and the togetherness.”

On Atleti scoring the opener right after the red card: “That was key. A brilliant free kick from Julian. Also, the timing of Alex’s [Sorloth] goal in the second half – it was good timing of things.”

On being patient: “Barcelona are a top team, of course, and the situations they put you in, but you’ve got to dig in and be together, and when you get your moments, you have to take them.”

On the second leg: “It’s gonna be a massive game; we know that. We need calm heads for sure, but take every game as they come, so a good victory today, but on to the next game.”

PSG punish Liverpool in Paris

Elsewhere this evening, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain have taken a huge step towards the semifinals after beating Liverpool 2-0 in France.

Desire Doue opened the scoring for the hosts after just 11 minutes, with a deflected effort that looped over Liverpool’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

PSG continued to dominate, but it took them until the 65th minute to add a second as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored a brilliant solo goal.

The French side were awarded a penalty late on, but the referee overturned his own decision after a VAR check.

Alvarez wins player of the match award

He deserves it for that free kick alone – and it looks like he won it for that, as well.

“In games like these, with teams that know each other so well, someone has to produce a special moment. Alvarez scored a magical free kick.”

That’s the verdict from the UEFA panel who decide these awards.

Atleti break their Camp Nou curse

February 2006 was the last time that Atletico Madrid went to Barcelona’s famous Camp Nou and won.

That unwelcome record has finally come to an end this evening. Atleti showed brilliant fight to resist an early onslaught from Barcelona, with the game changing on the brink of half-time.

Simeone was fouled by Cubarsi, and the Barca defender was sent off after a VAR check. Alvarez stepped up to score the subsequent free kick, and the away team went into the half-time break ahead.

Hansi Flick made some changes at half-time, including the removal of the impressive Rashford, but Barcelona couldn’t find a goal, and Sorloth doubled Atleti’s lead.

The hosts kept pushing for a goal, but they weren’t able to find a way back into the game.

Atletico Madrid don’t mind. Their players are too busy celebrating with the away fans who are tucked away in a corner of Camp Nou.
